Honoring our Local Golden Circle of Champions: Natalie
Natalie’s Story
In June 2023, Natalie noticed a small bump on her head. Initially dismissed as a cyst or lipoma by doctors after imaging, the bump began to grow rapidly, tripling in size within weeks. Despite multiple consultations, we were advised to wait for a scheduled removal surgery at the Children’s Hospital in Madera.
By the time of her surgery, the situation had escalated. Natalie, then just 11 years old and a 6th grader at Magnolia Elementary, was admitted to the hospital. The tumor was removed and biopsied, revealing a diagnosis of B cell non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma at stage 2. This marked the beginning of a challenging journey for Natalie and our family. She was admitted for a week at the hospital, where they placed her port and ran some more tests.
On November 13, 2023, Natalie started chemotherapy. The initial months were particularly tough, with frequent hospital stays due to complications. Our family made the decision to move her care to Palo Alto, where we stayed at the Ronald McDonald House for about five months. Natalie’s condition required close monitoring, frequent blood transfusions, and extensive hospital care. The care team wanted Natalie to remain close to the hospital.
Despite the challenges, Natalie remained a bright and happy spirit. Known for her love of music and community service, she played the clarinet in her school band and was part of the kindness crew. She enjoyed singing and playing music at the local wood park and often cleaned up parks around Oakdale.
As Natalie’s health began to improve, she was able to return home, though frequent hospital visits continued for chemotherapy and lab work. Her resilience and positivity shone through, supported by her classmates and her teacher, Mrs. Fitzmaurice, at Magnolia.
Currently, Natalie is in the maintenance phase of her treatment, visiting the hospital once a week. With about 13 months left in her treatment journey, she is eager to regain her strength and return to school full-time. Despite having rough days, her determination remains strong.
Natalie is actively involved in scouts and dreams of becoming a pilot, looking forward to a future filled with possibilities. Her journey is a testament to her courage, supported by the love and encouragement of her family, friends, and community.
